As a teenager, I watched President Nixon fight back tears on live television as he resigned the presidency, rather than face his inevitable impeachment. A quarter-century later, I watched scene after scene of President Clinton fighting for his political survival after he was impeached by the House of Representatives, yet not convicted by the Senate.
President Nixon's crime was that he participated in the cover-up of a politically motivated burglary – a crime he did not know about when it actually occurred. President Clinton's crime was that he lied under oath about the nature of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
While the actions of both of these men were clearly wrong, I think most of us would agree that neither of their actions stood to fundamentally alter the public rule of law. Nixon was not saying that he had the right to have his political operatives break into the Democrat headquarters; Clinton was not saying that he had the right to lie under oath. Neither of them were claiming that they had a legitimate right as the President of the United States to abandon the rule of law.
Juxtapose the actions of those two former presidents, with the actions of our current President.
Most of us have heard or seen the tapes of President Obama saying that he is not a dictator, that he is not an emperor, that he was elected to execute the laws of the United States of America, that he cannot make his own laws, that he has to work within the system… Etc., regarding any level of amnesty for illegal aliens.
I ask you to consider the fruit of the actions of these three men. What were the implications of Nixon's crime on American society? What impact did Clinton's actions have on the safety of our city streets?
Or asked differently, which of the three actions poses the greatest threat to the rule of law in America? The ones of Nixon and Clinton, who both acknowledged in one way or another that they were wrong? Or the actions of President Obama, who now claims that as President he has the right to abandon the Constitution and betray the rule of law?
Which of the actions of these three men has the capacity for the most harm over the long term? Which of their actions has the capacity to pave the way for an emperor like presidency? Which of these actions has the highest likelihood of undermining the rule of law and trashing the Constitution?
Even the most casual – but honest – observers would concur that the long-term impact for undermining the rule of law (not to mention a political and demographic change for the good of the Democrat party that will come) from Obama's actions pose the greatest threat to to American law and liberty.
So, if the respective Congresses during Nixon's and Clinton's presidency's felt it their constitutional obligation and duty to impeach a sitting President for violating his oath of office, why would our current Congress shrink from its Constitutional duties?
We've all heard Republicans insist that Obama has trashed the Constitution, abandoned the rule of law, exceeded the powers of the Presidency, etc. We've heard it from elected officials; we've heard it from GOP consultants and hacks like Karl Rove. Yet they cower from exercising the power of the law they possess to remove this tyrant from office.
The sad and simple truth is this: the Republican led House and Senate will not rise as men to fulfill their sworn duty because they are politically calculating cowards. They are "politically calculating" that if they impeach Obama, it will hurt them in 2016, and that if they don't, their "moderation" will help them in the 2016 elections.
In other words, they are putting politics ahead of the rule of law, just as Obama has done. Obama is ravaging the Constitution for political gain, and the Republicans - who could stop this travesty - are watching the crime in real time...and doing nothing for their own political gain.
If our Republic dies – as the Roman Republic did as the Caesars became dictators and "gods" – history will remember that the villains were not simply the men like Barack Hussein Obama who seized dictatorial power to themselves. It will remember the villains and cowards like John Boehner and Mitch McConnell - and the geldings and mules they lead - who let it die, while they had the power to save it.
God save us from Obama. God save us from John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and Karl Rove. Amen.
